This Reading Journal Thingy Mrs. Oles is Making Us Do: Quentin's Chapter

Quentin's 18 points
  • Quentin's chapter is even MORE CONFUSING than Benjy's chapter.  I thought I had this figured out and then boom I don't.  Quentin's chapter isn't as crazily disjointed as Benjy's chapter, but Quentin is definitely a more chaotic narrator.  Quentin remembers lots of things, but they aren't divided into separate and repeating episodes like Benjy's memories.
  • Quentin finds himself "in time again."  Translation to modern day: He just woke up.  Faulker uses large difficult words to describe Quentin since he is supposed to be smart (aka guys he's at Harvard.)  That Membean is gonna pay off somehow!
  • Quentin LOVES to think and is OBSESSED with time.  Oh, he's also obsessed with Caddy (that poor girl), other girls, incest, and fighting guys for girls. Hmmm....
  • Quentin tries to convince his dad he's committed incest with Caddy (his sister) when in reality he hasn't. He not only TELLS his dad that he convinces him.  You strange, strange boy...
  • Quentin is fixated upon and wants to kill Dalton Ames.  Ames is the man who says "All women are bitches."  MAN I LOVE THIS GUY!!
  • When Quentin goes to get his watch, he breaks the watch, then twists off its hands.  Then he notices red smears on the glass, and finally realizes he's cut his finger.  This is totally backwards.  Quentin definitely doesn't have it together this morning.  Who breaks their grandfather's watch...ya weirdo!!
  • Herbert (Caddy's husband) seems like a bit of a jerk (sorry, Herb no nicer way to say it)
  • Quentin things "again" is the saddest word he's ever heard.  Sadder than "was."  Yay for Faulkner confusing us the heck out with time!  Not sure what's happening here, and Quentin (in the mental state he's in) obviously won't give us any clues
  • The mother continues to be a jerk.  She says everyone ignores her and doesn't pay her the respect she deserves; Jason is the only one who resembles the Bascombs (her family, man I can't wait to meet Jason), and she feels God cursed her by giving her Benjy.  She's a winner.
  • Quentin says he can "always feel noon."  NO MORE FEELING OR SMELLING PLEASE.  Okay, you can't feel noon, but for whatever reason Quentin can
  • Herbert was kicked out of Harvard for cheating (wowww...).  He's also a drunk
  • The Compson father is "drinking himself to death."
  • Sorry to paint this picture in your head, but at one point Quentin and Natalie (his "girlfriend" from the past) are sitting in a barn "dancing sitting down."  I have no idea what this means nor do I want to discuss it in any more detail, just thought I'd point it out.. But, unfortunately for Natalie Quentin kicks her out and calls her a "cowface."
  • When Julio accuses Quentin of stealing his sister, instead of running away or fighting, he sits down and laughs hysterically might I add
  • Quentin asks Caddy if she remembers the time she sat in the branch and got her drawers muddy and then pulls out a knife to kill her, but can't do it...Quentin grows increasingly obsessive over who Caddy loves
  • At one point, Quentin is musing about the quality of light, and being all poetic and difficult, when its just the light of a streetcar...man...we have the next TS Elliot here baby
  • Quentin thinks about honeysuckle and describes it as having a "sad scent".  Okay, not possible again...but ya know what I'm gonna roll with it. The night and the honeysuckle mix up Quentin's thoughts and symbolize the chaos of his existence (yes, sorry I am assuming again, please don't be mad).
  • All and all, there are a lot of bell tolls, which represent time, which Quentin, interestingly enough, is obsessed with
