This Reading Journal Thingy Mrs. Oles is Making Us Do: Jason's Chapter

Jason's 18 Points
  • Jason's narration takes place exactly 1 day before Benjy's section
  • Jason's such a great guy, especially considering his first line reads, and I quote Faulkner here, "Once a bitch always a bitch, what I say."  Love him already!
  • Mother continues to think her family is cursed and "knows she's a burden to everyone."  Geez, she calls her 3 other kids burdens, then calls herself a burden to Jason.  Hmm..
  • Not important to the plot, but Quentin (Caddy's daughter) is 17 and begs for multiple cups of coffee from Dilsey, while Dilsey says that 17 year old girls don't need that much caffeine.  Wow, that sounds awfully familiar to my current caffeine situation in my family...
  • When Jason accuses Quentin of hanging with men, he calls men "dam slick-headed jellybeans" and honestly that made me laugh for like 30 minutes...
  • Jason blames the Jews for cotton being a speculation crop and why he can't get any money.  Honestly, guys, great guy....
  • Jason never keeps anything written by women...umm...Jason, I'm slightly offended..
  • At one point, Jason notices Uncle Maury's black gloves, and Jason specifies that he remembers paying for those gloves years ago, one month after Father came home with Caddy's baby...ok...Jason...you are a little TOO obsessed with money to be sane!
  • At one point, Jason threatens to "fix" Dilsey....gross is all I can think...
  • Jason scams his niece at one point-makes her sign a money order without being able to look at it...and he still says Caddy doesn't send HIM money...
  • Mother refuses to take money from Caddy and calls her a "fallen woman".  Ha.
  • At one point Quentin is all "grummed up" with makeup and Jason is convinced she is a prostitute...wow harsh dude
  • As Jason gets angrier, his narration gets more disjointed.  He often thinks about how angry he is at Quentin and how he will "fix" her.  There's that "fix" connotation again.  I would be scared out of my mind if I were a woman in Jason's life...
  • Jason won't marry Loraine because "good women sleep around" and "prostitutes are just prostitutes."
  • Jason remarks how a priest is probably getting fat off other people's money, and how much circus people make.  He is fixated on money.  Like really he needs to see a psychiatrist!
  • Jason enjoyed tormenting Luster by burning his tickets to the show
  • Mother admits that she's let Jason down.  The money went to send Quentin to Harvard (who jumped off a bridge).  Jason was supposed to go to work in the bank where Herbert (Caddy's husband) worked.  That never happened, so she blames Caddy and then herself.  And she blames Quentin for being a curse....really lovely...really..
  • I believe that Jason is a reliable narrator because he is such a flat character and doesn't change very much.  So, I believe he is telling it as it is.  I don't know, you can argue with me Mrs. Oles (actually I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE) to have a discussion on this.  But that's just what I think...
